HOBBIES COURSES

DEBUT : The Vocals Debut exam is for candidates who have been learning a short time and have learnt the basic skills. There are two types of exam available at Debut: Grade Exam or Performance Certificate. Please see the Examinations section for an explanation of the differences. Students will learn the five-note major scale and major arpeggio, Spoken rhythms etc.
 
GRADE 1: The Grade 1 Vocals is for candidates who have mastered the key basic skills in vocal performance. There are two types of exam: Grade Exams and Performance Certificates. The use of a microphone is not mandatory at Grade 1, but candidates may use one if they feel it will enhance their performance. Students will learn Dynamics, lyrics, rhythms and short phrases, The major scale and arpeggio, Small major intervals and spoken rhythms.
 
GRADE 2: At Vocals Grade 2 you'll focus on the mechanics of professional vocal performance, from tone and dynamics to chest voice and small intervals. Then your skills will be tested in three short performances (five for performance certificate) of a range of Rockschool compositions and your choice of repertoire. Students will learn Dynamic changes, tone, chest voice and small intervals, The natural minor scale and minor arpeggio, Small major and minor intervals and spoken rhythms etc.

 

INTERMEDIATE COURSES

GRADE 3: Vocals Grade 3 adds improvisation elements and concentrates on fundamental areas of technique, such as perfect intervals, bends, small leaps and arpeggios. At exam time, you'll be tested across a series of three or five performances, depending on the exam you choose. Students will learn Quick dynamic changes, bends, wider ranges, head voice, small leaps, limited improvisation, The major and natural minor scales and the major and minor arpeggios, Perfect intervals and spoken rhythms.

 

GRADE 4: At Vocals Grade 4, it's time to harmonise and sing backing vocals. You'll also improve transitions between registers and expand your music theory before being testing your new skills in a series of performance pieces in your exam. Students will learn Two-­part backing vocals, slides, trilldowns, harmonising in 3rds, longer phrases, improvisation and development, greater use of head voice, control of the chest voice and transitions between the registers, The Major Pentatonic scale, the major arpeggio and a major ascending arpeggio with dominant 7 descent, Large major intervals, diction, articulation and microphone technique.

 

GRADE 5: Vocals Grade 5 covers advanced singing techniques such as melismas, slides, trills and scoops. You'll also improve your microphone technique, and bring it all together across a series of performance pieces. Students will learn two­-part backing vocals, melismas, scoops, harmonising in 3rds, improvisation and development, tonal control through the registers, The Minor Pentatonic scale and a major ascending arpeggio with dominant 7 descent covering a range of a 10th, Large major intervals, diction, articulation and microphone technique etc.

 

PROFESSIONAL COURSES

GRADE 6:  At Vocals Grade 6 you'll test your vocal cords and improve your control by tackling large major and minor intervals, new scales and tackling dynamics and register changes. At exam time, you'll perform a testing series of longer pieces. Students will learn Three­-part backing vocals, applying stylistic techniques, musical improvisation and development, harmonising in 3rds and 4ths, tone quality in conjunction with dynamics and register changes, The Blues Scale and a major/diminished arpeggio, Large major and minor intervals, phrasing and microphone technique etc.
 
GRADE 7: When you reach Vocals Grade 7, you're well on your way to becoming a pro­level vocalist. So it's time to up your game, as you master advanced stylistic techniques, sustained note bends and large intervallic leaps, before performing a series of extended performance pieces in your exam. Students will learn, Three-­part backing vocals, applying advanced stylistic techniques, musical improvisation and development, harmonising in 3rds and 4ths, tonal control, chromatic step phrasing, sustained note bends, extended range and large intervallic leaps, The harmonic minor scale and augmented arpeggio, Major/minor interval sequences, legato/staccato phrasing and microphone technique etc.
 
GRADE 8: Pass Vocals Grade 8, and you're ready to sing on any stage or in any session in the popular music world. First, though, you'll need to prove you're ready by demonstrating sophisticated phrasing, extended range, comprehensive theory knowledge and put in perfect performances at exam time. Students will learn Three ­part backing vocals, stylistic use of techniques and improvisation/development, register flips, long melismas, sustained vibrato, slides to scream, extended range and intervals, The Chromatic Scale and diminished 7th arpeggio, Large intervals in major/minor sequences, advanced phrasing and articulation and microphone techniques etc.
